NIAGARA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT

Niagara University began as a humble seminary founded by Vincentian Priests during the 1850s. Due to its beginnings, Niagara has carried a strong foundational principle that when we acquire knowledge, we are responsible to assist others in improving the quality of life, and solving complex societal problems through a combination of professional skills and vibrant leadership abilities. Through their education at Niagara, graduates are taught and encouraged to engage in collaborative efforts to help solve everyday problems in their workplace, to bring professionalism and a higher standard of capability, and to improve the advancement of humanity in any way possible.

Mission

The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management is dedicated to providing an innovative, high-quality education that prepares students for leadership roles in hospitality, tourism, and sport by promoting professionalism and integrating technology, management, entrepreneurship, service and experiential learning into the educational experience. The college strives to enrich students’ learning through culturally diverse and international learning opportunities.
Goals

The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management of Niagara University, established in 1968 as the first program in the world offering a bachelor’s degree in tourism, provides a curriculum and learning environment that gives students a variety of experiences and skills necessary to assume leadership positions in today’s fast-changing hospitality and tourism industry. Taking advantage of the university’s location near one of the world’s major tourism and hospitality centers, the college offers B.S. degrees in hotel and restaurant management, tourism and recreation management, and sport management. The curriculum provides a comprehensive body of knowledge about the hotel, restaurant, sport, recreation, and tourism industries, preparing students for the rich variety of job opportunities offered by the world’s single largest industry.

Hotel & Restaurant Management

The hotel and restaurant management degree program at Niagara University prepares students for management careers in the global hospitality industry. The curriculum is based on a dynamic business environment core developed with specialized emphasis on the unique technological, managerial, and analytical requirements of managers and executives in the hotel and restaurant industries. Hotel and restaurant industry recruiters stress the need for our graduates to posses both theoretical and practical skills and experiences. Accordingly, the HRM curriculum specifically addresses the delicate balance between these two critical areas of learning. Many courses offer a practical component. Case studies are utilized throughout the curriculum as are technology-based projects. Integrated throughout the curriculum is an emphasis on globalization, leadership and technological advances in hotels and restaurants. The hotel/restaurant core program challenges students to master today's hospitality management competencies, including strategic management, finance and accounting, marketing, human resources, technology, and leadership. The program encourages further specialization through achievement of a single or double concentration selected from these concentrations: hotel planning, development and operations; food and beverage management; and luxury hospitality operations.

Moreover, students are able to enhance their study of the major through the selection of both a concentration and focus. Each HRM major selects a concentration and each concentration allows a selection from two focus areas. This maximizes student choice, allowing more breadth and depth in the curriculum.

HRM students selecting a concentration in hotel planning, development and operations can select a focus from: operational planning and control or property development; HRM students with a concentration in food and beverage management can select a focus from: entrepreneurship or food and beverage operations management; and HRM students concentrating in luxury hospitality operations can select a focus from: resort and spa management or club management.

Upon completion of the B.S. degree in hotel and restaurant management, the student is prepared with competencies to be successful in a number of hospitality careers: marketing and sales, front desk or housekeeping management, restaurant management, dining room management, casino and resort management, catering management, convention services management, and in-flight catering, just to name a few. Upon graduation, students may also pursue graduate studies.

Destination

Ubud & Bali Culture

Ubud is a highland town on the Indonesian island of Bali, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency. One of Bali's major arts and culture centres, Ubud, has developed a vibrant tourism industry with its copious shops, artisans and galleries.Ubud has a population of approximately 8,000 people, though these days the burgeoning town is becoming difficult to distinguish from the growing patchwork of villages that surround it.
The main street is Jalan Raya Ubud (Jalan Raya means main road), which runs east-west through the center of town. Two long roads, Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman, extend south from Jalan Raya Ubud. Puri Saren Agung is a large palace located at the intersection of Monkey Forest and Jalan Raya Ubudroads. The home of Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati (1910-1978), the last "king" of Ubud, is now occupied by his descendants and dance performances held in its courtyard. The home was also one of Ubud's first hotels, dating back to the 1930s.The Ubud Monkey Forest is a sacred nature reserve located near the southern end of Jalan Monkey Forest. The habitat houses a temple and approximately 340 crab-eating Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) monkeys.
Ubud tourism focuses on art, culture, yoga and nature. In contrast to the main tourist area in southern Bali, the Ubud area boasts forests, rivers, cooler temperatures and less congestion although traffic has increased dramatically in the past decade.
The Moon of Pejeng, in nearby Pejeng, is the largest single-cast bronze kettledrum in the world, dating from circa 300BC. It is a popular destination for tourists interested in local culture, as is the 11th centuryGoa Gajah, or 'Elephant Cave', temple complex.
Tourism on the island developed after the arrival of Walter Spies, an ethnic German born in Russia who taught painting and music, and dabbled in dance. Spies and foreign painters Willem Hofker and Rudolf Bonnet entertained celebrities including Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward, Barbara Hutton, H.G. Wells and Vicki Baum. They brought in some of the greatest artists from all over Bali to teach and train the Balinese in arts, helping Ubud become the cultural centre of Bali. The Bali tourist boom since the late 1960s has seen much development in the town; however, it remains a centre of artistic pursuit.

Functions

Conferences

The air-conditioned conference room can seat up to 25 persons for a theatre-style conference, or can be prepared as a formal boardroom for meetings of up to 14 persons.
It is fully equipped with state-of-the art audio & visual aids including video projection, connected to a fully wired computer system, wireless & cable Internet access, and a speaker conferencing telephone. Office supplies and basic refreshments are included with bookings for its use.
The conference room can also be converted into a mini theatre with projector screening for movies or DVDs.

Parties

Be it a birthday celebration, staff appreciation luncheon, wedding anniversary for a couple or 50 persons, holiday festivities, the Viceroy Bali events team can customize and execute each function according to individual expectations.
The hotel's event spaces can accommodate up to 100 people, with menu selections ranging from á la carte, set menu or, generous buffets.

Burj Khalifa

Burj Al Arab is a luxurious hotel located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is the world's only 7 star Hotel and is the fourth tallest hotel in the world. Burj Al Arab stands on an artificial island 280 m (920 ft) from Jumeirah beach and is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. The shape of the structure is designed to mimic the sail of a ship. It has a helipad near the roof at a height of 210 m (689 ft) above ground.

Features

Several features of the hotel required complex engineering feats to achieve. The hotel rests on an artificial island constructed 280 m (920 ft) offshore. To secure a foundation, the builders drove 230 forty-meter-long (130 ft) concrete piles into the sand.

Engineers created a ground/surface layer of large rocks, which is circled with a concrete honeycomb pattern, which serves to protect the foundation from erosion. It took three years to reclaim the land from the sea, while it took fewer than three years to construct the building itself. The building contains over 70,000 m3 (92,000 cu yd) of concrete and 9,000 tons of steel.

Rooms and suites

The hotel is managed by the Jumeirah Group. Despite its size, Burj Al Arab holds only 28 double-story floors which accommodate 202 bedroom suites. The smallest suite occupies an area of 169 m2 (1,820 sq ft), the largest covers 780m2 (8,400 sq ft).The Royal Suite, billed at US$18,716 per night, is listed at number 12 on World's 15 most expensive hotel suites compiled by CNN Go in 2012.The Burj Al Arab is very popular with the Chinese market, which made up 25 percent of all bookings at the hotel in 2011 and 2012.

Restaurants

Al Muntaha ("Highest"), is located 200 m (660 ft) above the Persian Gulf, offering a view of Dubai. It is supported by a full cantilever that extends 27 m (89 ft) from either side of the mast, and is accessed by a panoramic elevator.

Al Mahara ("Oyster"), which is accessed via a simulated submarine voyage, features a large seawater aquarium, holding roughly 990,000 L (260,000 US gal) of water. The wall of the tank, made of acrylic glass in order to withstand the water pressure, is about 18 cm (7.1 in) thick.

In 1956, Fairleigh Dickinson gained University status and, one year later, the 178-acre Vanderbilt-Twombly estate was acquired in Madison to serve as a third campus (College at Florham).

FDU became the first American university to own a campus in England when it acquired Wroxton College from Trinity College, Oxford University. Opened in 1965, Wroxton College offers American students an array of graduate and undergraduate programs as well as an enriching cultural experience. Formerly a 13th-century abbey, Wroxton College is now a beautifully restored and modernized Jacobean mansion. In 2007, FDU commenced undergraduate classes at a new facility in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Recognizing that the student profile on most U.S. campuses is changing dramatically, the University's Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies (originally New College of General and Continuing Studies) was formed in 1998 to provide a unified approach to and enhanced focus on the adult learner and to continue to position FDU as a leader in providing learning opportunities in a strong academic foundation for students of all ages.

FDU has maintained its commitment to broadening global horizons and fostering greater international understanding. In 2000, the Board of Trustees adopted a newly focused mission for FDU: to prepare students for world citizenship through global education.

Each of the University campuses has a unique character and vitality. Students benefit from studying at a comprehensive university that offers a wide range of programs and courses, but they also enjoy an atmosphere of warmth and personal attention usually found at much smaller institutions.

Today, FDU offers over 100 degree programs at the associate, baccalaureate, master's and doctor's levels. Its wide range of offerings, coupled with the depth and expertise of its faculty, has Fairleigh Dickinson University poised to serve the citizens of New Jersey and beyond.

Cornell University School of Hotel Administration

Cornell University elevates the very definition of higher education to a new status. Historically one of the most diverse and prestigious universities in the United States, Cornell has built a legacy of outstanding educational opportunities for a wide array of people from varied backgrounds. Since the 1860s, following the American Civil War, it has boasted an unprecedented dedication to enrolling people of many races, genders, and cultural backgrounds. The best education is provided by the unique integration of practical instruction blended with an education in the classics. The School of Hotel Administration has carried on the reputation of Cornell in its preparation of graduates taking on professional venues throughout the field of hospitality.

Cornell is a private, Ivy League university and the land-grant university for New York State. Cornell's mission is to discover, preserve, and disseminate knowledge; produce creative work; and promote a culture of broad inquiry throughout and beyond the Cornell community. Cornell also aims, through public service, to enhance the lives and livelihoods of our students, the people of New York, and others around the world.

University Vision

Cornell University will be widely recognized as a top-ten research university in the world, and a model university for the interweaving of liberal education and fundamental knowledge with practical education and impact on societal and world problems.
The nature and implicit values of Cornell University were the theme of President Skorton's "State of the University" address on October 23, 2009. He argued that Cornell University is supported by four fundamental pillars:

Core Values

  • Classical and contemporary inquiry, "shaped by the founder's commitment to liberal and practical education." In other words, Cornell values the arts and humanities as well as advanced scientific and technological research; in broader terms, the university is committed to the interweaving of fundamental knowledge and practical education.
  • "Thinking otherwise" Cornell's faculty members have a history of being intellectually diverse and entrepreneurial and as Carl Becker indicated, "thinking otherwise." This reflects a deep commitment to academic freedom and a belief that such freedom is essential to creativity and innovation. The One Cornell theme of our strategic plan stresses the importance of creative collaborations that emerge from the "bottom up" rather than from the "top down."
  • Student access, which expresses a central principle of Ezra Cornell's original vision, namely a university open and accessible to all who merit entrance ("any person"). The longstanding and recently reaffirmed commitment to need-blind admissions reflects this value, as does the commitment of the university to diversity and inclusion and the notion that diversity and excellence are interrelated. The university's commitment to student access has been tested in recent years, given significant competition with peer institutions, and Cornell has addressed this challenge successfully with a program to reduce the costs of a Cornell education for students from families in lower income quintiles.
  • Public engagement, which expresses the university's commitment to search for knowledge-based solutions to societal and world problems. Public engagement is an interpretation of the university's outreach mission that emphasizes being proactive (actively engaged) and having a public impact. It implies a broadening of the historic land grant mission of the university.

Libraries

Cornell University Library stands at the center of intellectual life on campus. Expert librarians are available in person—and online 24/7—to help navigate our world-class collections and assist with papers, exam prep, and long-term projects. We're a home away from home, with warm, inviting spaces for solo study and high-tech, flexible spaces for group work. Students and faculty agree: The Library is an indispensable partner in study, teaching, and research.

Facilities

Audaciously designed to empower collaboration, experiential learning, creative thinking, and inspired innovation; the warm and welcoming spaces that make up SHA embody our mission to educate and inspire future hospitality leaders and enhance our world-renown reputation for trailblazing education and research.Sophisticated design and function, combined with a warm, welcoming ambiance, enhanced by the latest technology: these are the qualities you might expect to find in a world-class luxury hotel. But this actually describes the School of Hotel Administration (SHA)—and that’s kind of the point. The places and spaces that make up SHA embody its mission to educate and inspire future hospitality leaders and enhance its world-renown reputation.

SHA students go on to build and lead some of the world’s finest hotels, restaurants, and resorts; help evolve a fast-growing global industry; and dream up new ways to create one-of-a-kind experiences. The SHA environment is purposely designed to emphasize collaboration and experiential learning and to open up space for creative thinking and inspired innovation. The addition of the Marriott Student Learning Center (MSLC) in 2012 greatly enhanced the SHA student experience by providing a warm and welcoming space for studying and socializing, as well as access to research resources and state-of-the-art technology.

SHA is also a destination for hospitality industry leaders who come together to share experiences and industry knowledge and network with students and each other. Our conference facilities—at the Robert A. and Jan M. Beck Center and the Statler Hotel—are among the most sophisticated on Cornell’s campus, which means we also regularly play host to international conferences, visiting scholars, and special events.

The Statler Hotel, Ithaca’s only AAA Four Diamond property, is probably SHA’s most well-known gem. The full-service luxury hotel has been home away from home for thousands of Cornell alumni, campus visitors, and students and their parents since it first opened its doors in 1989. It’s also an important part of the SHA’s teaching mission, providing hundreds of students each year with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in hotel and restaurant management and operations.
